Abstract

When Cyprus was occupied by the British, the municipalities had been set up in the cities in Cyprus under the Ottoman rule. Nevertheless the British administration decided that the organizations of the municipalities in Cyprus were inadequate and it was issued two regulations concerning the municipalities in 1880 and 1882. After 1885, some attempts were made by the government to form a selected Municipal Council but it was not accomplished, in that the selected Turkish and Greek members had different considerations concerning the municipality and presidency. Until 1908, the works of Nicosia Municipality were carried out by the Nicosia Municipal Commission consisted of three members appointed by the Cyprus Governor. The aim of this study is to evaluate this historical period with its reasons and results. Consequently it will be contributed to the history of Cyprus, the history of the Nicosia Municipality and the history of the local administration of Cyprus.
