Abstract

In Western culture, views on money and trade have historically been traced back to Aristotle. Western tradition of religion and philosophy has questioned the legitimacy of the principle of profit in business since Aristotle's time. Thomas Aquinas, like Aristotle, was not entirely against trade. Aquinas argued that moderate business conduct could be considered morally if directed toward human needs. Aquinas tried to reconcile economic life with Christian Theology. At the end of the Middle Ages, Western Christian thinkers developed a highly sophisticated approach to commercial matters. These thinkers conceded that trade kept people alive and dynamic. Adam Smith is at the very beginning of the modern approach that asserts that commercial life is moral. In this study, the relationship between money, trade and ethics in Western culture, evolution of views on money and trade, and the criticisms of Christian clergy to Adam Smith's vision of the social system are explained.
