Abstract

Animation has an important place in the history of cinema. Especially amongst movies for children the quantitative superiority of those who are in the type of animation is striking. However, major animation companies like Pixar are shaping content by targeting different age groups when making these films. Just as in the 2017 Coco movie, elements and formulas that can capture both children and adult audiences are evident. From this point of view, the depth of the narrative can be composed of different layers. In this study, the relationship between the position of the animation in the film industry and the audience was questioned, starting from the example of Coco movie. In this framework, the history of the animation is briefly reviewed and the productions of Pixar Company are reviewed. Then, in order to analyze the structure of Coco in detail, semiological methodology was applied and the method provided great contributions. The movie’s analysis was realized according to Greimas's actantial model. The relationship between the imaginary world of animation and the repetition of actantial narrative has been examined.
