Abstract

As the level of financial deepening increases countries can develop more economically and financially. The level of financial deepening differs in terms of developed and developing countries. Factors to be taken into consideration in each country can be changed according to the financial, social and institutional structures of the countries in the increase of the level of financial deepening. The aim of the study is to examine the factors affecting financial deepening in developing countries by econometric analysis. The relationship between financial deepening and financial liberalization, inflation, gross domestic savings, trade openness and foreign direct investment has been examined for the period 1980 – 2014 and 11 developing countries on annual data using various panel data analyses. The results of the analysis show that financial liberalization, inflation, trade openness, past financial deepening practices and foreign direct investments are important factors affecting financial deepening in some developing countries and country-based findings demonstrate that the factors affecting financial deepening differ in terms of countries.
