Abstract

The purpose of this study is to determine the affective attitudes of the students according to the factors of the scale towards English as a foreign language within the scope of common compulsory courses in four faculties. The study also attempts to examine to what extent attitudes of students towards English and English course are related to, their faculties, their departments and their sex. The population of the study is all the students who take English lessons in the first year of the faculties at Karamanoğlu Mehmetbey University. The sample is 316 students who are chosen by simple random sampling method. The results indicate that students have more positive attitudes at usability and teacher factors than interest and confidence factors. Besides, it is determined that there is significant differences with regards to faculty and department variables while there is not a significant difference in the sense of gender variable.
