Abstract

One of the works arisen as a literary genre in our literature is typology (kıyafetname). Typologies can be described as works which predict characteristics of people according to their appearance, some physical features, structures of their bodies and organs and some behaviours and manners. While most of these works were constituted based upon personal features, some of them -even though they form a small part of typologies- were constituted based upon some nations, communities and animals. The typology (kıyafetname) handled in this study, is a part of a work arranged as a corpus. It can be said that there is a parallelism between the qualities of organ-body-manner and the characteristics in the formation of typology (kıyafetname) texts -whether they are prose or poetic-. For this reason, such texts are rich in organ names and their formal characteristics, particularly. However, the typology (kıyafetname) handled in this study does not include the first part of this parallelism in terms of its structure, only the part of character features and the qualities about them. This typology (kıyafetname) does not include comments about features of character based upon head, eye, nose, brow, mouth etc. organs or the features like height, stance, walk etc. as in clasical typologies. It is only a text handling the features of some communities and some animals under the two titles of “Kıyafetnâme-i ekâlîm-i seb’a” and “Der beyan-ı kıyafet-nâme-i hayvânât”. This text, written by Ali el-Kâtib and situated among the leaves of 109b-112b in the manuscript called Dâfi’ü’l-hüzn, differs from many typologies at the point of mentioning the physiognomy of several communities and some animals. The text of the typology (kıyafetname), a short glossary and some notable features are presented to contribute to the researchers of the related fields.
