Abstract

In this article, health and notions about health in the first Turkish Islamic works Kutadgu Bilig, Divânü Lûgati’t Türk, Atebetü’l-Hakâyık and Divân-ı Hikmet will be examined. We believe that these texts from Ancient Turkish Era might more or less enlighten us about our ancestor’s aspects of health. In the first Turkish Islamic work to be known , Kutadgu Bilig , medicine is called “em” and doctor is called “emçi” .As he calls Shamans “ otacılar” ,Yusuf Has Hacip indicates that they are helpful people for communities. Divânü Lûgati’t Türk,started to be written in 1072 and completed in 1077 by Kaşgarlı Mahmut, includes wide information about Turkish folk medicine. Atebetü’l-Hakâyık,thought to have been written by Edib Ahmed B. Mahmud Yükneki in early XII. Century, is a religious-mystical work.Altough there isn’t direct information about medicine and health in the work, there are terms about health as remedy , otala-, ig (illness),em(medicine), curing. In Divân-ı Hikmet which involves lots of religious doctrines, physical diseases are not mentioned much. In Divan , there are clues about healing his and other’s spiritual diseases .
