Abstract

Turk modernization is still one of the problems that has come from the last period of the Ottomans until today and has not reached a consensus yet. This problem which came manifestation from the Ottomans, has been expected to be solved as its religion dimension so far. The question of where the religion will be placed has still been seemed for a solution in the process of modernization up to the present time. There are two reasons of this unsolved problem. First one, the endeavour of reaching modernity level which western has already reached and the second one is how to locate the place of religion in modernity for centuries. The Ottoman-Turk modernization, in fact, is a kind of social change process. The attitude and approaches of Turkish intellectuals to religion have shown differences. The starting point of these differences has come out from two different ideas during western style modernization. While first group intellectuals saw religion in the centre of social life, the other group ignored religion utterly. Definitely, whether the question of the consensus of Islam religion with modernity is possible or not has played an important role about their attitudes towards religion. In this study, it has been dealt with the two important Turkish intellectuals Niyazi Berkes, who has been seen as Kemalist, and Şerif Mardin, who has been adored by conservative part in Turkey. Their attitudes towards the consensus of Islam and modernity have been investigated in terms of secularism notion.
