Abstract

Saint Georges, who is adopted by Muslims as “Hazret-i Cercîs”, “Prophet Cercîs” or “Cercîs Aleyhisselam”, is a prophet posterior to Hz. İsa in Chrıstianism and kept going Hz. Isa’s commands. Based on Taberî Tarihi and church resources we learn that he was born in Remle town in Palestin, spent his life on trading in Palestin and Damascus around, and was tortured to death by the emperor of the city Mosul. Saint Georges’s suffering life has left indelible impressions on Muslims, too. The facts that he was patient to several tortures and thougt of estraying from God not even a moment, he wished mercy to cruels not indignation, were conduced him to be known in the World of Islam. Moreover in Muslim geography, a lot of narratives consist of his life and named as “Hikâyet-i Cercîs Peygamber” were penned. Here in our paper, narratives that are composed of Hz. Cercîs which is equal to Saint Georges in the World of Islam, are mentioned. In this paper, based on manuscripts that we chance upon in Milli Kütüphane archives and several historical resources, Hz. Cercîs’s historic and legendary personality will be tried to enlightened.
