Abstract

Makam/Maqam Music who has passed from Seljuq to the Ottoman Empire and finally to the Turkish Republic has lost his place in the society. In the last thirty years makam music production has almost ended. Makam music is becoming a dead language like Latin language. If someone want to know more about aEuropean language and the European culture should know about Latinlanguage, and if someone want to know more about Turkish music and culture should know about makam music. At the other hand makam music language can be still used in musical composition process and in this case there will be no need to classify it as a dead language. One of the actual problems is that makam music is known as monophonic in the traditional understanding, but a modern composition normally has to be arranged polyphonically by using western harmony. During the last 100 years makam music flavors and counterpoint technique has been used by Turkish polyphonic music composer but has not been accepted by the society. On the other hand during the last thirty years harmony technique is used and accepted even in the rearrangements of makam music songs. As this technique is alsoeasier to learn, it would be practical and useful to concentrate firstly on makam-harmony relationship especially in the composition education. Music which is a whole contains many expression possibilities in the intersection of these two techniques. These possibilities can be used in the composition process. Makam music which is a tradition of more than one thousand years can be used with western harmony and that may help the makam tradition to survive and evolve. In this article, it is proposed to make connection between harmonic progression, harmonization and makam and add the benefits to the music education in Turkey.
