Abstract

Surrealism was one of the most important art movements of the 20th century, which was officially born in 1924 and following turned into a global phenomenon as an art movement. Surrealists, whom investigated the inner world of human by the help of sociology, philosophy and psychology that had been changed by the war at the beginning of the century and Industrial Revolution, created a new reality for themselves by virtue of admitting human nature out of senses. This new reality concept, which created by the surrealists and based on the unconscious, seems to influence our culture more than any other art movements of the last century. Also, perception of ceramic material evolved by many revolutionary changes on art scope in 20th century. Ceramic turned into different tone artworks on hands of Picasso, Miro and Matisse contrary to its absolute traditional and functional manner. Following this, ceramic art has reached new formal and conceptual language with surrealism and has demonstrated an innovator attitude until today. The aim of this study is, to analyze the impact of the surrealist movement to contemporary ceramic art.
