Abstract

In this study, it was focused on the role and activities of Refet Pasha in the process of abolition of sultanate. Refet Pasha who showed up in Istanbul on 19th October 1922 with the directives of Mustafa Kemal Pasha regarding sultanate and caliphate was welcomed with effervescent affection demonstrations. From the moment he set foot in Istanbul, Refet Pasha gave the impression to the Istanbul Governmental members that he did not recognize any political authority other than TBMM (Grand National Assembly of Turkey) with his attitudes and behaviors. He prepared Istanbul community for the abolition of Sultanate by focusing on “National Reign” and “National Hegemony” with his speeches towards the community in the process of abolition of sultanate. On the other hand, he shared his opinions with the public regarding how the constitution and governmental system of the New Turkish State should have been in his long declaration given shortly after the abolition of sultanate. It was benefitted from archive sources, memories, periodicals, technical works and articles in the preparation of the study.
