Abstract

In ancient times, Nicomedia was a city within the borders of the Bithynia region. It is known that Astakos was the first community to live in the region. Information prior to the existence of the people of Astakos is not available. This city now covers the borders of Kocaeli (Izmit). The city is known to have an important status due to its geographical and strategic location. In addition, the city is suitable for maritime trade and has fertile land increases the value of the city. Another important issue is its proximity to Constantinople, which is what we now know as Istanbul. This geographical status is one of the important advantages of the region both in ancient times and today. Since it is the supplier of the city of Constantinople, its loss is irreplaceable. It remained under the Bithynia region until the time when the Roman Empire dominated the region. Later on, it became a Roman province. In this study, we want to shed light on a brief Antiquity Nicomedia by evaluating as much information as we can, including the oldest sources on the city of Nicomedia.
