Abstract

The purpose of special education is to develop the potential of the individual and to help him become an independent individual. Visual arts applications provide individuals with special needs with a lot of knowledge, skills and experience while facilitating their daily lives. The individual who tastes the sense of success starts to adapt to social life because he realizes himself and becomes happy, self-confident and courageous. This research is intended to help children with Down syndrome benefit from visual arts practices at the highest level and to reveal the importance of visual arts education in their development. In 2019, 8 children with Down syndrome in the 12-18 age range in the Umut drops special education and Rehabilitation Center in Hatay province were investigated for 4 months and their contribution to their development was investigated through visual arts studies. Qualitative research method was used in this research. The method of descriptive analysis was applied in the analysis of the pictures. Research based on observation, interview and practice has been conducted. As a result, visual arts activities give children skills while motivating them. Visual arts education in children, such as patience and dexterity, also increases the data has been reached.
