Abstract

Identity becomes a controversial concept in social and political life with the transformative effect of nationalistic movements coming from Europe in the last century of the Ottoman Empire.While making impossible the newly built "Ottoman Nation" perception, especially the disintegrating effect of the Balkan War, It requires the state understanding through ethnic consciousness. Although Ottoman state system, based on the principles of the union of different identities tries to solve the problem through traditional political ways with a reformist approach, the political conjuncture will not allow the solution. In this context, the novel starts to be highlighted by means of the most functional socialization in twentieth century. The Tanzimat novel is one of the most important witnesses to modernization.
