Abstract

Ahmet Mithat Efendi (1844-1912) is a writer of the Tanzimat period who, together with being a novelist, produced writings in almost all the fields of natural sciences and literature, published articles in the magazines and newspapers that he issued throughout his lifetime, and wrote a total of about two hundred books. Ahmet Mithat, one of the pioneer authors in his period, is known as `the first teacher` because he taught much with his works to his readers. The aim of this study is to detect Ahmet Mithat`s opinions on child education and to put forward the similarities and differences between his opinions and modern educational approaches. In this study, qualitative content analysis method is used to analyze author`s educational works, are mostly original in Ottoman language. As a conclusion, it is seen that Ahmet Mithat’s opinions about child education were much more ahead of his time and overlapped with recent educational approaches.
