Abstract

Abstract

The study attempts to discuss the deep abyss created by desire and reality today within the context of Charlot’s movie “Modern Times” and the novel of Jack London ““The People of the Abyss.”  London describes people living in poverty in the novel “People of the Abyss.” The people in the novel live in hunger and misery in the Eastside of London, which is rarely visited by anyone. The lives of these people are abysmal because of misery. Even light goes astray in those depths. Therefore, crime is mostly the brother of misery. Jack London's novel and Charlot’s film depict the social life of almost the same period in different ways. In the first, the plight of people suffering at the hands of the "devil of misery" is portrayed in a very realistic way. On the other hand, Charlot almost catches the devil of misery by the feet and makes the tragedy smile. Embracing the deep instinct of life, it strives to exist even in the most difficult times. As the different bears the fate of the weed, Charlot is expelled from wherever he enters. In the movie, it has been tried to determine how the Dionysian element, which the practical mind ignores, works in the movie in a minor key. Then, the main reason why alienation has become an opportunity is possible by ignoring the wild instinct that keeps the person alive and calls them to life. Concentrating on these two works, the study focuses on the gap between human imagination and reality. In these fluid times, when consumption is at a trot, the abyss has condemned the consciousness, which is bleeding with the desires created by the commodities that have deepened, to an insatiable hunger. That’s why, the real abyss is the abyss that humanity has fallen into in the century we live in. In the study, document analysis and hermeneutic methods were used and in this context, related documents were accessed and evaluated in a way to create data for the research.
