Abstract

Abstract

Metopic suture or frontal suture is a suture extending from nasion to bregma and located between the frontal bone (forehead bone) which is in two parts in the skulls of fetal individuals. At the end of these condmonth after birth, two frontal fragments begin to fuse. From the end of the ninth month to the age of two, the inter-frontal suture (metopic suture) begins to close from where the nasal bone and parietal bones (lateral skull bones) end. The metopic suture should usually close for 1 to 8 years. If closure is not completed in this process, it is defined as metopism. Some sources include this situation as epigenetic characters, while others consider it as anomaly. In this study, the skulls of 63 adult individuals from the necropolis dating from the last phase of the Middle Ages to the early stages of the Middle Ages between 2013-2016 in the Van Castle Mound were examined in terms of metopism. Considering at the gender distribution of the individual sexamined, they were identified 19 female, 43 male and 1 underknown gender. Metopism was detected in the skull of 8 (12,70%) individuals, which were 2 female (3.18%) and 6 male (9.52%). The incidence among females and males is 10.53% (2/19) in females and 13.95% (6/43) in males. When the data obtained were compared with the ancient Anatolian populations that were contemporary with the others, it was found that the value of metopism in the Van Castle Mound population was close to some societies. The material studied was also found to be more common in male individuals with metopism. Van region has a heterogeneous genetic structure due to its geographiclocation, which is open to gene flow both today and in the past.
