Abstract
Proverbs and idioms which have an important place from the view of Turkish language and culture, are from our vocabulary having made referance to almost in every terms by a great deal of poets. Along the history of Turkish poem history this issue, had become a tradition. Proverbs and idioms not only reveal the richness of expression of Turkish they also reflect the cultural structure of society to which it belongs such as traditions, thoughts and beliefs. A good number of Ottoman poets who had been critisized because of being stayed out of society used proverbs and idioms by adhering to this tradition. Derzizâde Ulvî, a 16th century poet whom we examined in our study, continued this tradition by using these proverbs and idioms, which are widely used in folk culture, in his poems.
