Abstract

Abstract

This study examines the effect of trade openness on inflation at the sub-sector level of Türkiye’s manufacturing industry over the period 2003–2023 using panel data methods. The analysis includes 16 sub-sectors for which complete data are available, and the Domestic Producer Price Index (D-PPI) is used as the indicator of inflation. Trade openness is measured through six different indicators based on the ratios of exports, imports, and total foreign trade to production value and value added. In the study, second-generation econometric methods that account for cross-sectional dependence and heterogeneity are employed, and long-run coefficient estimators are applied. The findings reveal a strong cointegration relationship between the variables and indicate that trade openness generally has a reducing effect on inflation. The indicators representing the ratio of exports and total foreign trade to value added show a more pronounced effect. However, the results also indicate that the relationship is not homogeneous across sectors and that the effects vary depending on sectoral characteristics. Overall, the findings support the Romer hypothesis at the sectoral level and suggest that trade openness can serve as an important policy tool in combating inflation.
