The aim of this study is to explain the theoretical foundations of the participatory speaking technique and to develop suggestions for activities that can be implemented in Turkish language lessons for Years 5–8. The study was conducted as a design and development study, drawing on data obtained through a document review within the framework of a qualitative research approach. The data sources for the study comprise academic studies on the participatory speaking technique, the Turkish language curriculum, national and international literature on speaking skills, and various scientific documents. The data obtained were analysed using qualitative data analysis methods, and the theoretical framework, methodological characteristics and implementation stages of participatory speaking were organised under common themes. Accordingly, participatory speaking activities have been designed for pupils in Years 5, 6, 7 and 8 to support their skills in oral interaction, expressing opinions, listening, relating to peers’ thoughts and generating joint solutions. The study concluded that participatory conversation is a functional conversational technique, as noted in the literature, which supports pupils’ active participation in the conversational process and is therefore deemed suitable for activity design.
