Alongside academic prototypes and commercial platforms, a third route has emerged for bringing large language models into digital games: mods developed by player communities. This review addresses that third route within the framework of modding theory and examines the open-source Mantella mod for Skyrim at the architectural level. The study first outlines the structural limits of deterministic NPC architectures, then analyses the layered pipeline of generative dialogue systems (speech recognition, context assembly, model inference, voice synthesis, memory). Mantella is compared with comprehensive community frameworks such as CHIM/Herika and with commercial platforms including Inworld, Convai, and NVIDIA ACE; it is argued that its open-source, modular structure, in which individual layers can be disabled, offers an inspectable research surface that overcomes the black-box constraint of closed systems. The review concludes that the modding ecosystem constitutes a distinctive middle path between laboratory control and ecological validity, and proposes a methodological framework for researchers investigating the effects of generative artificial intelligence in games.
