Abstract

Open green areas such as parks and recreation areas in cities contribute to social, health and economic issues through the functions it provides to people. Therefore, planning and designing open green spaces in the city should be done in order to provide maximum benefits. However, due to the growth of the population and the rapid increase of urbanization, these areas have been reduced and weakened in terms of quality, especially the destruction of plant materials. Landscape architects use plants (one-year herbaceous, perennial herbaceous, woody, bulbous, wrapper and climbers, shrubs and trees) according to their aesthetic or functional purposes and create different areas. The use of plants should be made according to the principles of plant design and design purposes. In our country, a number of problems are experienced from the wrong species selection to the wrong land use in the urban outdoor planting designs and often the use of plant species that do not comply with the ecology of the area and the desired result cannot be achieved from the planting design that carried out by non-specialists. The reason for this is the independent work of the designer and the practitioner, the possible differences to be made on the design in the application process is not made in the knowledge of the designer. In this study, the suitability of plant designs according to plant design principles in some recreation areas selected in Malatya city was observed and examined. According to the observations, it was observed that the plant designs in the recreation areas in Malatya were not in compliance with the principles.
