Abstract

Pharmaceutical industry is one of the most high value-adding sectors. USA China, Japan, Germany and France are the first five leading actors in the Pharmaceutical industry. Turkey is the 16th biggest market in the World. Turkey’s economy and economic integration can meet increasing health expenditures and social requirements. However, this situation also creates importing and dependency on the foreign originated pharmaceuticsThe pharmaceutics imported by Turkey is comprised of 7% of the foreign trade deficit in Turkey. In this study, we aimed to assess the effects of foreign investments on pharmaceutical sector in Turkey. In conclusion, we revealed that foreign investments had both positive and negative effects on the Turkish sector. The restrictions on free movement of goods across EU borders and high R&D costs cause that foreign corporates occupy Turkish market against domestic pharmaceutical firms. All these factors have forced Turkish companies to tu turn into generic drugs and a potential outsourcing market for multinational firms.
