TURKISH LEXICAL BORROWINGS IN PUNJABI LANGUAGE

Abstract

Punjab lands are not stranger to Turks. These soils have common history of more than 2500 years with Turks in history as in art, architecture, political, social and literary almost every aspect of life along with pre-Islamic period. After Islam, almost 900 years of almost continuous Turkish domination occurred in Punjab. Although the language of Punjab is an old language dating back 5-6000 years, its written works go back a thousand years. It is the state language of Pakistan in Punjab state and one of the 22 official languages in India. The grammar structure is close to Turkish, and according to one opinion, it is probably the one of the old language of a Turkish people. It is a language spoken by 120 million people around the world. The geography of Punjab was divided into two during the partition of India in 1947 and remained within the borders of Pakistan in the west and India in the east. In Turkey there is no any university department in this language. Punjabi language is very important in terms of Turkish history, architecture and art. In Turkey, there are no studies except for a few encyclopedia articles about this important language. In our study, we scanned four Punjabi dicitionaries in terms of Turkish words. We have added the equivalent words in Turkish dictionaries. We also benefited from Uzbek dictionaries in finding Turkish equavalents. We classified them thematically. We have also classified the morphological and semantic changes. 168 Turkish words were determined in this article and controversial words are not included in the list. Our work is highly important for being the first study conducted in Turkey on this topic.
