Abstract

Art is a fact, which has existed in all ages of human history. The evolutions of humankind have changed their life styles, viewpoints of life, art forms and viewpoints of art and art has emerged in different appearances in every period and in every society. The place of human body in art history is in the position of both producing and the model being produced. Body depiction attracted the attentions of the artists and the curiosity of investigating it brought the desire to portray it. In this context, as the depictions of body throughout the thousands of years were investigated and compared, it was observed that various cases emerged according to their periods. Grotesque figure understanding is also a product of changing perspective. Grotesque, which is a different form of aesthetic expression that combines ridiculous, imaginary and extreme with ugliness, has been adopted as a form of narration by many artists and some art movements in almost every period of art history. In this study, it was aimed to reveal the historical journey of the image of body and – by considering the changes resulting from this journey- the emergence of the groteque figüre concept and the way it has expressed itself in the art of painting.The documentary review was employed as the research method, Illustrations of grotesque figure depictions were included in the sample work review. In conclusion, the art of each era was able to express itself successfully by finding various ways in the originality of its inventions in order not to look like the previous at all. The products, which were new and presented with original expressions, were visualized for the purpose with an artistic language without aiming for beauty. The aesthetics of ugliness was able to make the audience happy in a different state of beauty.
