THE OPINIONS OF PRE-SCHOOL TEACHERS TOWARDS PREPARING MENU: AMASYA CASE

Abstract

The fundamental element of hıman life is the nutrition. Nutrition is the intake and usage of necessary food into human body to survive and lead a healthy life. It is necessary to establish the eating habit of a human being during his childhood to become beneficial for the rest of his life. In this context, the nutrition starting from the childhood seems to be important. The purpose of this study is to determine the opinions of pre-school teachers towards preparing the nutritional menu.In the research, interview technique which is one of the qualitative methods was used. Quasi-structured face to face interviews were realized with the pre-school teachers. The participants of the research are the pre-school teachers working in different schools of Amasya in the academic year 2017-2018. The study group consists of 10 female pre-school teachers. As a data collecting tool, quasi-structured interview form with 8 open-ended question was used. The interviews were realized in the school where the pre-school teachers work. The interviews were recorded. At the end of the research, Most of the teachers said that their training on preparing the nutritional menu was limited with the training they received during the pre-service period and they added that the nutritional menu was prepared either by the school administration or by the cooks working at the schools. They also added that the menu was the same for all students. While preparing the menu at the institutions depends on the seasonal food, whether the students like the food and the calories of the food. The study group also said that they gave importance to the socio-economic level of the families while preparing the menu. The most encountered negative sides while preparing the menu are that the students do not like the food on the menu and the unconcousness of the parents about the nutritiion of their children. It was seen that the institutions offered the necessary calory that a child needs in a certain period of the . However, children need such amount of calory in a day. The attitututes of the children towards menu is their choise, the interaction among them and the habits originating from their parents. To solve the problem, it is necessary to find some alternative food but the institutions do not prefer to offer children such an opportunity. The obtained answers towards the menu indicated in contemprary education should be student centered. At the end of the reseach some recommendations were given to the pre-school teachers, prospective teachers and the families.
