Abstract

After WWI, the clash of the social classes has emerged and the rich become richer and the poor become poorer. This clear-cut difference creates an unhappy atmosphere for the working class members. Moreover, this gloomy mood forces the writers of the age to write on the psychology of the society. Soon afterward, Anti- Semitic Nazi leader Adolf Hitler becomes the most powerful politician in Germany establishing the National Socialist German Workers’ Party which is called Nazi Party. The most horrific thing about Hitler is that his only aim is to create a pure German race. As a result of fact that a great number of people have been killed and the effects of Holocaust can be observed in many aspects of Jewish life. For instance; they have been forced to migrate, and they get some diseases besides physical exhaustion because of the hard working conditions in the camps. More importantly, they face many psychologically problems and also they fight against insomnia and nightmares. These dreadful results of Holocaust make Jewish writers question and write on these issues which consist of a transformation in society not only physically but also psychologically. Rosa Dublin who turns into a wicked and ragged old woman in The Shawl by Cynthia Ozick and Gregor Samsa who turns into a monstrous vermin can be seen among the best examples of this transformation process. In this essay, the effects of Holocaust on the lives of Jewish people will be discussed and Gregor Samsa and Rosa Dublin’s transformation into “nothing” on a psychological level will be dealt with.
