Abstract

This study was carried out to reveal the bioethics approaches of preservice science teachers about some genetic engineering issues which include ethical dilemmas. The study is designed based on one of the qualitative research method named as phenomenology and analyzed with content analysis. The study group consisted of 138 preservice science teachers. The instrument was developed by the researchers were used as data collection tools to investigate the bioethic approaches of preservice science teachers about the ethical dilemma scenarios. Scenario-related bioethics approaches of preservice science teachers were treated by coding with content analysis. It was observed that the teacher candidates changed the bioethical approaches while making decision for each scenario were varied. A great majority of the preservice teachers have demonstrated a benefit-based approach towards GMO in agriculture, golden rice and intelligence intervention but demonstrated a scientific-based and benefit-based approach towards gender determination. Also, it has been found that the bioethical approaches of preservice science teacher differ according to the class level.
