THE “LABYRINTHIAN” SPACE IN THE MARCH 12 NOVELS

Abstract

This work consists of an examination of 40 novels, which all relate to the March 12 Military Intervention (“the March 12 novels”). In the March 12 novels, a central role is given to the individual and their inner world, and it is often the case that the external environments used by the authors also reflect the inner world of the protagonists. Often, the petit-bourgoise protagonists of these novels withdraw into themselves; the spiritual turmoils they feel are intensified and their self-questioning is deepened because of the March 12 defeat. The authors, who are mostly victims of the process and events of March 12 as well, give an additional importance to transferring the thoughts and feelings of the protagonists to the reader and informing them about the process and events of March 12. This preference of reflecting 'inner world experiences', can also be seen in the description of the spaces and external environments in the novels. The spaces in the March 12 novels are, regardless of whether they are open or closed physically, when they are considered as “phenomenal spaces” it can be seen that they are gloomy and oppressive spaces which can also be considered “labyrinthian”. The main reason behind this situation is related to the petit-bourgeoise protagonists’ depression and in some cases their incarcaration by law enforcement or their physical shutting away for self-questioning and introspection. In these novels which aim to reflect the inner world of petit-bourgeoise individuals, the spaces external environments are mostly dark, gloomy and pessimistic, representing the inner world of the protagonists.
