Abstract

Doğubeyazıt which has been a gateway and a border city since Urartu, entered into a process of a rapid construction by becoming a central city in the Otto-man Empire. Ishak Pasha Palace, the most important architectural building to-day, still endures with its attractive view the same as when when it was con-structed in Doğubeyazıt which had been in the position of an important region in this process. Having been completed in 1784, the palace was entirely built according to the tradition of Turkish palace. However, in terms of the archi-tectural design and decorations, it stands out possessing very different proper-ties from the traditional Ottoman palace. Life tree motifs were prominently used seven times: on the right and left side of the crown door of the harem section, within the ledge surrounding the crown door of the harem section, in-side the crown door of the men’s quarter, in the interior of the mosque, on both sides of the heads of the pillars of the mihrab niche and in the body of the tomb. Connoting the pillar of universe, heaven, sky and fertility, the life tree has existed in all belief systems as a universal motif that symbolizes all relations between life and the universe. This motif, used in different styles and meanings, has been widely used in Ottoman art in structures such as mad-rasas, mosques, palaces figured in Seljuk structures. However, reflecting more decorative features in the eighteenth century, the life tree emerged with the different compositions including also flowers along with the floral motifs. In the life tree motifs of Ishak Pasha Palace, we are faced with the interesting ex-amples in different styles from naturalism to abstraction. Life tree motifs, em-bodying more decorative features together with the properties of that period and the regional differences, have been used in different compositions in the palace, involving both flowers and the floral motifs.
