Abstract

Asvaghosha (A.D 2nd century), who is known for its contribution to the Buddhist culture is an Indian Buddhist dramatist. He assumed the post of vice president in the Buddhist council gathered at the request of Kanishka, the Emperor of Kushans. He is known for his dramas called Buddhacharita and Saundarananda and is shown as the first representative of the Buddhist dramatic art. He has written his works with Sanskrit language. Our knowledge related to his life is rather limited. Literary historians attribute many other Buddhist works to him. The separation of Buddhism into the sects and spreading out of India roughly correspond to his life period. The Buddhist tradition and teachings are masterfully reflected in his works, and these works are transferred to many other world languages, especially Chinese. Thus, he has a very important share in the formation of Buddhist Asian thought and belief.
