Abstract

Opera is a form of musical theatre which emerged in sixteenth century in Europe. Opera works can be described as works of art that are composed mostly about epic or heroic stories. Opera, which can also be identified as musical drama (Drama per Musica) is an important art form by consisting various visual and audial elements in it. Especially in classical opera the role of singers is very important since opera is a form of art which reflects emotions and ideas through human voice. Because of this an opera singer is not a means of presenting a work of art but one of the key factors in actualizing it. As being a form of art which combines music with theatrical elements opera brings along both mental and physical struggles to singers before, during and after the performance. On the other hand, although singers have experienced those various difficulties, the musical and professional satisfactory of being an opera singer cannot be underestimated. This research’s main aim is to investigate those positive and negative factors that affect singers’ performances. Outcomes of this research will be beneficial for the ones who will choose opera singing as a profession in future. Singers of Giacomo PUCCINI’s “Tosca” opera which is staged by Samsun State Opera and Ballet in 2015-2016 season are the focus group of this study. In-depth interview technique is used as the method of the research. Questions of those interviews are mainly about singers’ preparation process to their performances. Aim of this study is to elaborate the phenomenon of performance in music by examining opera and opera singers.
