Abstract

In this article, name analysis of the characters in the works of F.M. Dostoyevsky will be researched. It is possible to confront with a great number of symbols on top of the names given to the characters in the works of the writer. Landscapes, portraits and places can be showed as its samples. Especially, common name matching of the characters in XIX century Russian literature was also effectively used by Dostoyevsky. Its main reason is not only to call the characters with these names but also to give clues about their past and lifestyles. Dostoyevsky generally remarks the name matching of the characters starting from his first novel Poor Folk till his last novel The Karamazov Brothers. Certainly, Dostoyevsky writes his novels considering life conditions of that period Russia. This method is used for describing the characters both positively and negatively by the writer. In this study, the relations of the characters with their names in the Poor Folk, Crime and Punishment, The Idiot and The Karamazov Brothers novels will be endeavoured to narrate.
