Abstract

Many scientific studies describing the observed and expected effects of climate change in Turkey, indicate that Şanlıurfa and Harran Plain are in the area which affected/could be affected negatively by climate change. The Harran Plain which an important agricultural production region in Turkey, is located in a highly vulnerable region in terms of drought and desertification relationships. The water carried by irrigation canals from Atatürk Dam helps to avoid negative impacts on a very hot and dry summer in the plain. However, high rate of evaporation in this conditions cause a significant amount of water loss by evaporation from the surface of open irrigation channels. Also improper irrigation techniques with high rate of evaporation emergences the land use problem. The ecosystems which under the control of natural processes at around the plain are more vulnerable to desertification. Therefore, to reduce the negative effects of climate change and the development of methods of compliance with the new conditions is very important. In this study, we investigated the drought properties in Harran Plain by the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) and Thornthwaite method using Akçakale and Şanlıurfa meteorological stations data within the period of 1975 to 2012. The drought that occurred in the season expected rainy is more dangerous than the drought occurred in dry summer season and so to determine this is very important. Due to rainfall events related to meteorological drought that starts drought, the meteorological drought in the plains was investigated by teleconnection relations. For this purpose, the nature of the relationship with North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), which affects especially winter rainfall in the important part of Turkey, and Harran Plain and its surrounding rainfall and droughts was identified. At the thought would be useful for the determination of the irrigation period of the year and amount of irrigation, the beginning, ending and duration of the dry season were determined. In addition, the possibility of drought, drought intensity, the number of dry periods and drought magnitude was determined.
