Abstract

Theo Jansen creates kinetic statues since 1990s based on PVC pipes, pet bottles, nylon sheets, and duct tape. Jansen's statues are ever developing and evolving products of a new consideration of nature with complex mechanisms built on basic physical rules, kinetic frames based on genetic algorithms as developed and tested by the aid of computers, and kinesthetic designs creating a mechanical awareness of their habitat. The statues shape in flesh and bones through a process by which survival strategies are aestheticized, or basically find certain forms, against the challenging natural conditions as it has been with the evolution process. Through a particular fast evolution process, Jansen's statues aim to construct bios (life), which creates its parallel chronos (time) system within the given cosmos (universe) without any perspective of dominating the very logos (order) that maintains the cosmos. Opening a new debate on the ethos of evolution, Jansen's creatures provide human beings
