Abstract

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the impacts of language acquired during pre-school period on primary literacy training. To this end, interviews were conducted with fifteen primary school grade one teachers from five different provinces (Adana: 2, Aydın: 1, Trabzon: 2, Van: 3 and Nevşehir: 7) during 2013-2014 academic year through semi-structured questionnaires. Responses of participants were collected in written form. In the analysis of collected data, descriptive analysis method, a qualitative analysis method, was utilized. Consequently, according to views of 1st grade teachers; inadequate development of language acquisition skills during pre-school period makes a directly adverse impact on primary literacy process. Meanwhile, local dialects and accents have a direct or indirect negative impact on primary literacy process in some cases. Whereas, language skills acquired at an adequate level has a directly and positive effect upon primary literacy process.
