Abstract

Ottoman cemetery and gravestones in Mashuqiya, are accepted as historical artifacts in terms of their shape and content. These gravestones were erected between 18th and 20th centuries. However, these artifacts is not protected and cared properly today because of ignorance and neglect in Turkey and other Islamic countries. Gravestones in Mashuqiya are precious treasures in terms of cultural history of the town. It is very important that these artifacts should be identified, categorized and analysed by the methodology of history of art and then scientifict publication should be made. Today Mashuqiya is a village in Kartepe district of Kocaeli. Thus Mashuqiya is sharing common history with Izmit. Regarding Kartepe, it is a new district of Kocaeli.
