Abstract

Abstract

The present study aimed to examine the effect of engaging in exercise or sports on body image in nonathletes. A total of 912 subjects (462 female, 450 male), between the ages of 18 and 70, have participated in the study. The Two Dimensional Body Image Scale was applied to participants, and scores were compared using multiway analysis of variance (ANOVA) and multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA). It was observed that there were no significant differences between groups that were formed in terms of age, education, marital status and engaging in exercise or sports in terms of total score of the scale, but in gender, income status and satisfaction with life groups. Additionally, in comparing “Appearance” and “Functions” sub-dimensions’ scores, it was found that there were significant differences between groups that were formed regarding the sports participation status in terms of “Functions” sub-dimension. Results were discussed in line with the related studies in literature.
