Abstract

Abstract

Urbans are settlements that contain cultural, economic, and social diversity and offer higher living standards than countries. Cities frequently apply the expansion policy, mainly because they have large populations of people. Thus, new structures, spaces, and roads are being built. These structures, which are important symbols in the construction of urban memory, turn into memory spaces for the citizens. Memory spaces define the spaces that contain the memories of the citizens and turn into an identity component for the citizens. The destructions, changes, and transformations of these places naturally damage the urban memory and cause the urban identity to be forgotten. While various interventions that ensure the transformation of urbans cause the city to lose its original identity, new places also damage the historical dimension of the urban and the continuity of urban memory. In this context, the province of Muş has incorporated different ethnic and religious groups due to both its geographical location and historical past, but it is a city that has lost this diversity over time. This study aims to analyze the old and new photographs of the memory spaces, which contain the memories of the citizens but have been changed, transformed, or destroyed over time, in the city of Muş, by comparing them. As a result of the analysis, it is aimed to reveal the importance of memory spaces for the city and its inhabitants, and to emphasize the economic, cultural, and social value of preserving memory spaces for the urban and its inhabitants.
