Abstract

Abstract

Art integration is a teaching approach in which meaningful learning is realized by combining art with other disciplinary areas and enriching it with creative processes. The art integration method, in which subjects and concepts belonging to the combined disciplines are transferred to the student through applications with artistic content, can be realized between two or more disciplinary areas. This research examines the combining of Visual Arts course with Science course where visual materials are most used. The objective of the research is to determine the feelings and thoughts of the students and educators involved in this process regarding the art integration method and make recommendations to those who educational policy makers, educators and researchers. This research was carried out in the spring semester of the 2018-2019 academic year at a public school in Çarşamba district, Samsun province. The implementation carried out within the scope of the science class lasted 7 weeks. The group of students to be studied was selected using the availability sampling method. Interviewed with ten students from among them which selected with volunteer. Phenomenology method was used in this study, which is qualitative method research. As a data collection tool, semi-structured interview questions prepared by the researcher accompanied by expert opinions were used. The data obtained were subjected to content analysis and divided into categories and themes. The findings show that students love the art integration method, increase their motivation, strengthen their communication and collaboration skills, ensure the permanence of knowledge, influence their academic achievements and strengthen their self-expression skills.
