This study aims to determine the opinions of music education students and faculty members regarding the model proposing the reduction of undergraduate education from four years to three years and the division of the academic year into three semesters, which has recently become a significant topic of discussion in higher education systems. Specifically, the study examines the possible effects of this structural transformation on educational quality, academic performance, and student development within the context of music teacher education. A qualitative research approach was adopted in the study. Data were collected through a focus group interview conducted with eight undergraduate students studying in music teacher education departments at different universities in Türkiye and semi-structured individual interviews with eleven faculty members. The obtained data were analyzed using thematic analysis through the MAXQDA software program, and the reliability coefficient of the research was calculated as .93. The findings revealed that both students and faculty members displayed largely critical and distant attitudes toward the proposed model. Although students expressed limited positive opinions such as early graduation, financial savings, and entering the employment process earlier, they also raised serious concerns regarding academic equivalency problems, the shortening of professional maturation processes, pressure on mental health, and the loss of opportunities to finance their education by working during summer breaks. Faculty members emphasized that the model contradicts the practice-based and time-dependent nature of music education, would create significant inadequacies especially for students coming from non-music backgrounds, and that the elimination of summer breaks could negatively affect academic productivity and motivation. As a result, it was concluded that the trimester system is incompatible with the “process and internalization” requirements underlying music education, may reduce pedagogical efficiency, and carries the risk of burnout for both students and academics.
