Abstract
Güzellik ve çirkinlik kavramlarına her yüzyılda insanoğlu tarafından yeni bir anlam eklenmiş ve böylece onu yapılandırmak mümkün olmuştur. Felsefenin olduğu kadar sanatın da konusu olan bu kavramları anlayabilmek, sanat tarihine tarihsel bir gözle bakmayı gerektirmektedir. Örneğin güzellik kavramı, tarihsel süreçte kimi zaman oran ve uyum kavramlarıyla, kimi zaman iyi kavramıyla, kimi zaman da erdem olarak farklı dönemlerde farklı şekillerde tarif edilmiştir. Çirkinlik kavramı ise başlarda güzelin zıttı olarak görülürken, sonraları kendisi de bir gerçeklik olarak algılanmış ve kendi başına inceleme konusu olmuştur. Bu çalışma içerisinde sanat tarihi yönünden ele alınacak olan bu kavramlar, bu alandaki önemli isimlerden birisi olan Umberto Eco’nun iki önemli eseri üzerinden incelenecektir.

Abstract
Every century, concepts of beauty and ugliness have been added by human beings and thus it has become possible to construct it. Being able to understand these concepts as much as the art of philosophy requires a historical look at the history of art. For example, the notion of beauty has been described in different ways at different times in the historical process, sometimes with the concepts of proportion and harmony, sometimes with the concept of good, and sometimes as virtue. While the notion of ugliness was initially seen as the opposite of the beauty, the latter itself was perceived as a reality and has become a subject of examination on its own. These concepts, which will be discussed in terms of art history in this study, will be examined through two important works of Umberto Eco, one of the important names in this area.
