Abstract

Van Province, which is located within the borders of Van Lake Basin and is one of the important cities of the Eastern Anatolia Region, shows variety in terms of historical and cultural heritage as a natural result of hosting many civilizations and states in its history. Christian religious architecture structures have survived to this day with their architectural styles as well as stone decoration elements. Although there are various researches and publications for these works, it is seen that the crown-arch plastic ornaments, which draw attention in the arrangement of the façade program, have not been studied in detail until now. In this study, it is aimed to introduce the crown-arch plastic ornaments in the arrangement of the façade decoration program of the Christian religious architecture buildings in Van. A total of 18 vegetative and geometric crown-arch plastic ornaments on windows and triangular niches were studied on the façades. Plastic decoration samples, both visually and technically documented, were also evaluated by comparing them with similar samples of surrounding cultures.
