TURKISH/MONGOLIAN LOANWORDS AND TURKISH LEXICAL ELEMENTS IN URDU

Abstract

Urdu is the largest man-made language in the world in terms of the number of people speaking. This language has been made when Muslim Turks brought Arabic, Persian and Turkish with them to India. Some studies have been done on Turkish loanwords in Urdu. These studies were not criticised and evaluated yet. This study has been prepared both as a review of the previous studies and completing their missing elements. Turkish words and elements in Urdu have been determined by scanning 10 different Urdu dictionaries as 17 volumes. These words and elements have been evaluated according to Turkish language etymology dictionaries. There are 253 originally Turkish, 104 hybrids, 19 Turkish lexical elements/suffixes, 40 Mongolian, and 10 words were carried by Turkish from other languages to Urdu in borrowing list. By this calculation, the number of Turkish origin loanwords and elements are 376. 12 words given in previous studies were excluded from list due to their absence in the scanned dictionaries or misreadings, while 29 words were not listed in Turkish and Mongolian in the sources. Totally, 460 words and lexical elements were evaluated in this study. Turkish words and elements identified in Urdu were analyzed in terms of thematical, morphological and phonetical aspects. As a result of these analyzes, thematical densities, morphological structures and phonetical changes of Turkish words and elements in Urdu have been classified. Additionally in this study, the emergence of Urdu, use area, Urdu-Turkish language relations are also mentioned briefly.
