Abstract

Peter’ın Education and Educated Man P.H. Hirst.’in Liberal Education and the Nature of Knowledge eserleri çerçevesinde tartışılmıştır. Çalışma, Aristo’nun liberal eğitime miras temalarının günümüzde de hala devam etmekte olduğunu, dönemin eğitim anlayışı içinde yansıtmayı amaçlar.

Abstract

There are two traditions of educational thought in Western Europe today: Liberal and Progressive Education traditions. Progressive education puts the child’s powers, interests and individuality at the center of educational activities and emphasizes learning by practice. On the other hand, liberal education’s concern is academic and aims to expand the intellectual horizons of people. It takes cultural canon as its center. Although features of Liberal Education have been democratized by such recent theorist as Mortimer Adler, R.S. Peters and P. Hirst, they are still evident in it. Features of today's liberal education come from Aristotle who is the first theorist. In this paper, Aristotelian themes in liberal education are identified. To that end, the history of Liberal education tradition whose roots the Aristotelian themes dating back to Ancient Greece are discussed. The paper aims to show the continuity of central themes in the thoughts of some prominent present advocates liberal education.
