Abstract

Art ontology, as a branch of ontology, deals with the issues of how and what kind of existences are works of art. In the research, Vincent Van Gogh's painting named "Potato Eaters" was tried to be analyzed according to the theory of the layers put forward by Nicolai Hartmann in the ontology of art. Van Gogh is one of the most famous names in art history with both his works and his life. The painting, which is one of the artist's first works and defined as the first masterpiece, reflects the lives of villagers and workers that the artist witnessed and influenced very much, but also in a striking way. Also, unlike the painters of his age, he painted the phenomenon of social reality with an original style in his work. The artist faced negative criticism during his period, but his pursuit of reality was understood after his death. As a result, Van Gogh's "Potato Eaters" painting is an dominant work that has made its name in the history of art with its iconic power as well as the different techniques and style it has in its front structure, and the meanings of the people it contains in its back structure.
