Abstract

It is important to select frequently used words, to classify these from easy to difficult and to follow this classification while teaching vocabulary. Verbs are also classified separately. Teaching vocabulary needs identification of verbs in terms of which ones to be taught in what level and how much to be taught. This process of identification is based on the result of frequency studies. Such studies may focus on coursebooks for foreigners and written or oral narrations of students. It is also important to investigate graded readers that reflect the language use in context so that the target verbs can be identified. Therefore, this study aims to determine the verbs found in graded readers, their frequency of use and distribution among language levels. To this end, the study employs document analysis, and Turkish graded readers at A1, A2, B1, B2 and C1 levels published by Erdem Publications have been analyzed. The results revealed the verbs used in these graded readers, their frequency of use and distribution across language levels.
