Abstract

It is a fact that in today's world, environmental problems are visibly increased. Despite all the legal regulations made, no reduction in environmental problems has been observed. this conclusion proved that environmental problems cannot be solved by administrative and legal measures. Academic studies carried out so far have revealed that education and the awareness and attitude to be created through this education are important in solving environmental problems. Considering both the level of education they receive and the positions they will gain in working life, university students constitute the most important mass in this sense. This study aims to understand the attitudes, behaviors and awareness levels of university students about environmental issues and to reveal the factors affecting these attitudes and behaviors. Other objectives of the study are to reveal what is the most important environmental problem for students and their perceptions about the nature-human relationship. According to the findings of the study, it was observed that the gender, age, the order of preference the department that they read, the way they preferred the department they read, the average monthly income of their family, the education level of their mother, the average monthly expenditure level, and having taken a theoretical lesson about the environment are effective in environmental attitudes and behaviors of students. On the other hand, it was observed that the family type of the students, their permanent place of residence, the place where the household head lives, the profession of the household head, the education level of their fathers, their family's balance of income and expenditures, and the student's balance of income and expenditures are not effective on the environmental attitudes and behaviors of the students. It is concluded that the cultural background of students determines their environmental attitudes and behaviors positively more than their economic conditions. This result has once again brought forward the importance of both environmental education and the widespread delivery of this education in the society, as stressed in the relevant literature.
