Abstract

The northern Iraq was left to Iraq with the Ankara treaty signed in 1926. This geography, which was the Ottoman territory as the Mosul Province until this date, Today, Mosul, Kirkuk, Erbil, Sulaymaniyah and Dohuk includes cities. The northern Iraq includes many ethnic and religious elements, mostly Arabs, Kurds and Turkmens live in the region. According to the new Iraq constitution adopted after 2003, Kurds living in the region established an autonomous administration including Erbil, Dohuk and Sulaymaniyah. While Iraqi Kurds mostly live in these cities, Mosul, Kirkuk and Diyala also have significant Kurdish population. Iraqi Kurds have the characteristics of a feudal social structure that includes many tribes. In Sulaimaniyah region, Sorani, Arbil and Dohuk regions are widely spoken in Kirmanci dialects. In addition, the Iraqi Kurds mostly belong to the Sunni sect and the Kadiri and Naqshbandi sects are widespread. It is considered that Iraqi Kurds, who have taken important steps towards nationalization in recent years, are unlikely to achieve this goal for economic, political and diplomatic reasons.
